Serra de Montejunto II – NOSSA SENHORA DAS NEVES CHAPEL

The  “Serra de Montejunto” is a mountain of Portugal located in the municipalities of Alenquer and Cadaval. It is the highest natural viewpoint of Extremadura, rising to 666 meters above sea level.At the top of Serra de Montejunto, stands the chapel of Senhora das Neves, place of pilgrimages since medieval times.

Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Neves stands near the Convent of the Dominican Order, built in the thirteenth century. Legends of enchanted Moorish. It is said that these inhabit the mountains for centuries, in the caves and ravines, which offer gold in exchange for milk gifts. Serra de Montejunto is considered by many the “Serra Mãe” sacred sanctuary of hunting and pastors. Ruins of the Dominican convent built between 1217 and 1220, when the Portuguese Frei Soeiro Gomes, settled here. After the eighteenth century, the monks return and reconstruct the convent on the ruins of the original. The ruins that are now are actually the eighteenth century. There is a belief in the existence of werewolves and ominous animals as well as the belief that there are hidden treasures in the mountains.
