Talent: Singer, Songwriter, Dancer and Actor
Marit “Minniva” Børresen was born March 28th 1990. The third in the line of four siblings, she grew up with three brothers, her mother and father.
The first 10 years of Minniva’s life she resided in the outskirts of a town called Larvik, in Norway. Her childhood home was close to nature, animals and water. These calm and natural surroundings would become important in her childhood, adult life, as well as her passion and work with music. The nature would be a source for inspiration, peace, and solidarity, as well as a safe haven from the chaos and pressure from the outside world.
Only 9 years old Minniva’s mother became life threateningly ill, causing Minniva to take up the mantle as a substitute mother for her younger brother. She would help out with homework, cooking, cleaning, and everything in between.
One year after her mother became ill, her family moved to a small farm in the neighboring town Sandefjord. Minniva quickly ended up helping her father in his work with special needs children and youth on the farm. She had to grow up fast and learned early on to take responsibility and to take care of others. Although this resulted in losing some of her childhood, she gained experience, knowledge and wisdom far beyond her years. Through this work she learned to see things, people and herself in new and different perspectives. She got a better understanding of the world and the people in it. Through the hardship of growing up quickly and being forced to take responsibility, she also acquired incredibly hard working ethics, attitude and endurance. All of these things would prove instrumental to her career and work with music.
As she grew older music became an important safe haven and something she could escape to. Being too shy to actually do anything with her talent and the frustration that came with the realization that she was too shy to chase her dreams, singing, writing lyrics and melodies was something she found comfort in doing. Music became an outlet where she could express her feelings and create something she could be proud of. Though music she could turn something painful into something beautiful. She could take the beauty of a lone star upon the night sky, and place it down on a piece of paper. Through music she could feel and become something more than herself. Through music fantasy could become reality. However it would take years before she would get the confidence, courage and faith to pursue music as a career.
School would not be the place that gave Minniva the confidence or opportunity to chase her dreams. It was more about making it through to the other end. It turned out that in addition to being shy Minniva was also dyslectic. Her dyslexia was something she did not find out about until she had been struggling halfway through her school years. For a long time being called and viewed as stupid by her fellow students. Up until she found out that she was dyslectic, she had never been able to understand “what was wrong with her”, why she could not seem to be able to read as fast or grasp the context of what she was reading as well as those surrounding her. In addition, and in part of her dyslexia, Minniva was bullied a lot. Being a rather shy girl with a bad self-image, she struggled to fit in, which in turn did not make it easy to make friends. School was for a long time a place of hardship and isolation.
Although music was important, other activities and hobbies were also a big part of Minniva’s childhood. At the age of 10 she started dancing, which she kept on doing for several years and have kept doing on her own ever since.
Being somewhat of a tom girl Minniva spent a lot of time chasing in her brothers footsteps, which lead her to playing soccer. Soccer was something she would come to love not only because she got to be a part of something and her contributions were appreciated, but because it was physically demanding. It turned out that Minniva had a talent when it came to playing soccer and was considered rather good in her prime. A career as a soccer player was even considered, but slowly gave way to adult life, work and music.
Clothing and design had always played a big part in Minniva’s life. As a little girl she loved dressing up and could change outfits up to fifteen times in one day. She would dress up to see how things would look and fit together, or simply to dream, to play a character in a one man role-play. Taking something and making it something different, something more, became a passion she would later bring into her work with music.
Minniva’s music career began small with concerts held with only trees, animals and her closest family as audience members. The first band she was in was with her brothers. They held concerts on the kitchen floor with kettles and other kitchen supplies as instruments with Minniva as the band leader. She would hand out the instruments and decided who played what, and when. Her parents soon noticed her talent and passion for music. After realizing her potential for singing they arranged for her to get a vocal coach when she became a teenager. At this time she also started to take piano lessons as well as learning some guitar in school. Through her vocal couch she developed her talent and slowly began to build her confidence when it came to singing and performing. Her fear and anxiety for standing on a stage would slowly but surely diminish with time. After a few years she had learned enough to be able to coach and train herself and continue to develop her vocal talent. Eventually she started giving singing lessons to others who wanted to become better singers. Over the years she would also expand on her ability to play both piano and guitar.
The first time Minniva stood on a stage, was in a minor role in a school musical, as she declined the lead role being too scared to say yes. It wouldn’t be until one year later that she would find it in herself to rise to the occasion. It was through this that Minniva finally showed the people around her, her talent. So began the road to better self-esteem, feeling accepted and feeling like she fitted in.
Minniva was now starting to get the validation she had been looking for. She became more and more confident. She started doing talent and singing competitions, finally putting her voice out there. In 2006 she won the title “Singer of the year” in a local talent show. In that same talent show she ran on stage to help one of the other competitors, who had forgotten the words of the song she was singing. Minniva stood beside the other contestant and helped her along until she got back into the song. She then left the stage so not to interfere with the other girl’s performance. Minniva had now gotten to place where she was not only confident and strong, but she was able to be strong for others.
In 2011, at the age of 20, Minniva had her first professional debut and breakthrough. After moving to the capitol and earning her living by singing and writing songs mainly for “Russ” (Norwegian graduation ritual), she was discovered by music producers. With the pop single “Rush” she got recognition within the pop music community in Norway, in addition to stirring some interest outside the Norwegian borders. The single became a hit and at its peak topped the charts in Norway. At one point being number 9 on the “VG-Lista topp 10 single (norsk uke 11)” billboard. The same single also landed her a record deal. Everything seemed to be going great for the young pop star to be. People in the industry had high hopes for the young Minniva, with plans of turning her into a superstar. So what happened? Why didn’t Minniva become the next pop icon? Why was her pop career so short lived?
The world that she had been introduced to, and made a part of, failed to focus on what she deemed important, her values. Mainstream pop music was not really the type of music she was the most passionate about. Soon it became clear to her that the people around her wanted her to basically be a pretty face more than a voice. Noticing that there was a lot more focus on the visuals, meaning how she looked, than the sound and the music. She started to feel that this was not representing who she was, both as a performer and as an individual. For Minniva it was all about the passion and love for music. She believed that if she continued down the path others wanted and had more or less laid out for her, she could risk losing herself. She concluded that if she was to survive in the long run, she had to be true to herself. So she decided to step away from it all, and start over, down a path of her own choosing, free of outside demands and pressure to fit in a certain role.
In 2013 she would chase another chance at a music career through the Norwegian Idol TV show, making it as far as the top 50 contestants. At a key point in the competition and the reason why she didn’t make it further in the show, she left a stable group to go and help another group that was struggling with the assignment they had been given. After this she was told that she didn’t have what it took to succeed. She cared too much about helping others getting their shot to be able to get ahead herself. She was told that she had to put, and prioritize herself first, in front of everyone else. Not too deterred by this, due mostly to the fact that Idol and the pop music genre was once again a little too mainstream for it to truly be her dream. She felt that the show didn’t allow her to be who she really was, both as a performer and as an individual. If making it in Idol meant that she had to become someone else, it was simply not worth it, nor what she wanted. Minniva left Idol with her head held high, with the hope and belief that she could indeed make it as a singer and musician.
The trait that defines Minniva the most is not her talent when it comes to music and singing. It is rather her passion and love for people and the desire to help her fellow man. To help make the world a better place. More than wanting to get rich and be famous, her goal with her career is to be able to support herself and her family. To be able to give the people she loves what they need. To inspire other people to develop and express what they are passionate about. Helping people to chase their dreams, and make changes for the better. To be a source of inspiration, and a light.
Another trait that defines Minniva is her ability to appreciate the little things in life, whether it is a hot cup of tea or coffee, with good company, or by itself. Watching a good movie and listening to great music is of course something that brings joy to most people. However Minniva can find joy and wonder in seemingly insignificant things like the sound of the wind howling or rain dripping from the roof. She can watch a beautiful sunset or look up at the stars with wonder and awe. She can also gaze into lit candle or the shadow from a tree dancing in the wind. She finds inspiration in the world around her and is able to notice the details that make everything so unique and special.
Minniva worked for a short time in a nursing home, helping the elderly with their physical needs. However, she had her own way of working that differed from the norm. When the manager found out that Minniva spent more time entertaining the elderly, than her actual job of taking care of their physical needs. He figured had made a mistake when hiring her. Minniva’s logic was that people needed something in addition to having their physical needs met. There is no joy in having a healthy body if the mind is not. By entertaining through song and playing instruments she could help people in a different and an at least as important way. Luckily her boss agreed with her and instead of firing her for not doing her job, he changed her job description so that she could keep on singing and to entertain.
Early in 2015 Minniva decided to change the way she was living her life and finally chase her dream. Music had been a constant and vital part throughout her life. She had reached a point where she could not ignore or delay her dreams any longer. She knew that if she didn’t give it her all and truly chased her dream she would never be able to forgive herself. She could not stand the thought of spending the rest of her life not knowing whether or not she could get a music career and make a living doing what she felt she was meant to do.
Leaving her old life behind, Minniva moved from a house and into a cabin. Her plan to focus entirely on her music career meant she needed a place she could stay with a low rent. It would take over a year before she began to get an income as a result of her new career path. Not only in need of a place she could life with minimum expenses, it was also important for Minniva to be close to her family. Luckily her parents owned a small cabin near a forest that was available and close to her family, the cabin being only 15 m2, with no running water. With only two rooms, one being used as living quarters and the other as her music studio and workstation.
When Minniva first moved into her tiny cabin she spent the first days and weeks making the cabin feel like home. Decorating and creating a calm and inspirational surrounding for herself. The next month she spent acquiring the necessary equipment and learning the skills to use them. This included learning about camerawork and video editing. She also had to brush up on and learn more about music recording, mixing and mastering. In addition she had to find instrumentals she could work with.
This required a lot of effort and time. This was not made any easier due to her dyslexia. She had to learn about video editing, music production as well as communicating with people online, mostly in her second language. She had to read and grasp a lot of information fairly quickly. Although this turned out to be difficult, time consuming and at times frustrating, Minniva worked her way through it and have kept on overcoming every obstacles she has faced ever since.
Once she was up to speed on the technical and the administrative aspects she quickly and eagerly got to work on recording and making her first YouTube video. So caught up in everything she had to learn, and everything she had to get done in order to start up her YouTube channel, she worked up to and sometimes past 20 hours a day in the beginning.
In time musicians from all over the world took notice and wanted to be a part of the Minniva project. This meant that Minniva could collaborate with other musicians and make covers made from scratch the way she envisioned and wanted the songs to sound like. She no longer had to rely on what instrumentals were available and she was permitted to use.
In May 2015 she started up her Youtube channel and posted her first metal cover soon after. She has uploaded one video every week ever since with little to no exceptions. Most known for metal covers of band such as Kamelot, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Evanescence and Sabaton to name a few. With her clean vocal and her vocal range she have slowly but surely become known as a singer who can rival the industries greatest vocalists.
Throughout her Youtube career she has also taken songs from other genres, turning them into metal.
Although her main passion and focus is on metal music, Minniva listens to and appreciates a wide variety of music. She is better described as someone who loves music, rather than specific types of music.
In addition to her Youtube channel Minniva has also been involved with other projects over the years, lending her voice to bands/artists like Pellek, Aldaria and Orion’s Reign. She has also done a lot of singing in different venues like weddings and funerals, and held concerts with various musicians locally.
Other activates Minniva has indulged in over the years include, horse riding, ice hockey and climbing. She has taken education as a hairdresser, clothing designer and flower decorator. She has worked as a waiter and a saleswoman in a clothing store.
Working with music and making Youtube videos is something that Minniva truly loves doing and will keep on rocking in the future.
